Shot Blasting in Widnes & Merseyside

BCL Containers offers professional shot blasting in Widnes. We strip shipping containers, gates, railings, garden furniture and structural steelwork back to bare metal, ready for painting, powder coating or a protective coating.

We work with homeowners, fabricators, contractors and businesses across Merseyside, Cheshire and the wider North West: from Liverpool and St Helens through to Warrington, Runcorn and the Wirral.

What is shot blasting?

Shot blasting is a mechanical surface preparation process. Small steel pellets are propelled at high velocity onto a metal surface using a centrifugal wheel or air blast. The impact strips away rust, old paint, mill scale, and other contaminants, leaving behind a clean, profiled surface that new coatings can properly bond to.

Unlike hand grinding or chemical stripping, shot blasting is consistent, fast, and reaches every corner and crevice of a surface. The result is typically a surface cleanliness of
Sa 2.5 (near white metal) or better, the industry benchmark for most protective coating applications.

It's one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to prepare metal, which is why fabricators, contractors and restorers across Widnes and Merseyside rely on it before applying any protective finish.

Key applications for shot blasting

Shot blasting is suitable for a wide range of metal items and structures. The most common uses include:

  • Shipping containers - removing years of rust and old paint before repainting or conversion.

  • Garden furniture - stripping corroded or flaking metal back to clean steel.

  • Gates and railings - preparing wrought iron and mild steel for a fresh, long-lasting finish.

  • Structural steelwork - cleaning beams, frames, and fabrications ahead of protective coating.

  • Agricultural equipment - removing surface corrosion from machinery and trailers.

  • Plant and site equipment - general steelwork restoration and maintenance preparation.

What can’t you shot blast?

Shot blasting works brilliantly on robust steel and iron, but it isn't suitable for everything. Materials and items that are generally not compatible include:

  • Thin sheet metal - the impact can warp or distort lightweight panels

  • Aluminium - softer metals can be damaged depending on the shot type and pressure used

  • Glass and plastic components - will shatter or degrade under the blast

  • Wood - not suitable for any form of abrasive blasting

  • Delicate machined parts - tight tolerances and precision surfaces can be affected

In some cases, alternative surface preparation methods such as wet blasting or chemical treatment may be more appropriate. We'll always advise you on the best approach for your specific material and finish requirements.

How we use shot blasting for containers

Shipping containers are exposed to decades of harsh weather, salt air, and physical wear. By the time many of them come off the water, they're carrying a significant build-up of rust, old paint, and surface scale.

At BCL Containers, shot blasting is a key part of our container conversion process. Before we repaint, sell, or convert any unit, we strip it back to bare metal using shot blasting,  ensuring the steel is completely clean and properly profiled. This means any new paint or coating bonds directly to the metal rather than sitting on top of degraded material, significantly extending the life of both the container and its finish.

Shot blasting for garden furniture and gates in Widnes & Merseyside

Over time, even the sturdiest garden furniture and metal gates develop surface rust and flaking paint.

Shot blasting removes all of that corrosion and old coating right down to clean, bare metal, giving you the ideal surface for powder coating or a high-quality paint finish. The result is a restored piece that looks great and is properly protected against the elements going forward.

This service is popular with homeowners across Widnes, Runcorn, Warrington, Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area looking to revive ornamental gates, railings and garden furniture, as well as contractors needing steelwork prepared before installation. It's a cost-effective alternative to outright replacement, especially for well-made ironwork worth preserving.
