What is shot blasting?

Shot blasting is a mechanical surface preparation process. Small steel pellets are propelled at high velocity onto a metal surface using a centrifugal wheel or air blast. The impact strips away rust, old paint, mill scale, and other contaminants, leaving behind a clean, profiled surface that new coatings can properly bond to.

Unlike hand grinding or chemical stripping, shot blasting is consistent, fast, and reaches every corner and crevice of a surface. The result is typically a surface cleanliness of Sa 2.5 (near white metal) or better, the industry benchmark for most protective coating applications.

What can’t you shot blast?

Shot blasting works brilliantly on robust steel and iron, but it isn't suitable for everything. Materials and items that are generally not compatible include:

• Thin sheet metal - the impact can warp or distort lightweight panels

• Aluminium - softer metals can be damaged depending on the shot type and pressure used

• Glass and plastic components - will shatter or degrade under the blast

• Wood - not suitable for any form of abrasive blasting

• Delicate machined parts - tight tolerances and precision surfaces can be affected
  
  

In some cases, alternative surface preparation methods such as wet blasting or chemical treatment may be more appropriate. We'll always advise you on the best approach for your specific material and finish requirements.
